75th Anniversary of Royal Family Visit to South Africa Day6

Day6: 5th February 1947

Captain’s Diary

08.00 am the Vanguard passed 5 miles off Santa Cruz, Canary islands.

09.00 am  HMS Implacable Aircraft carrier commenced flying for the first time.

12.50 pm  St Kitts transferred Royal Standards and Lord High Admirals Flags Implacable, Cleopatra and Diadem for use during the Royal visit.

The Royal family watched as a rifle shooting contest took place.

After dinner the Royal party with some ships officers danced on the quarter deck.

CARS used on the Royal Visit

The main car used on the Tour was the Daimler Motor car model DE36. This car was a favourite round the world for Royal Families. In 1947 it was the world's most expensive car costing £7000 this equates to about £290,000 today. There were only 205 Daimler DE36 built between 1946-1953.

The two undated photos from the Royal Visit. I expect first is the DE36  the other maybe a Daimler 2.5 litre saloon?

Daimler Company Limited produced a booklet to celebrate the award of the contract to supply the vehicles for the Royal Visit. Some of the pages are reproduced here.
