75th Anniversary of Royal Family Visit to South Africa Day 15

 Day 15: 14h February 1947

Captain's Diary

A Sunderland from Cape Town was due to rendezvous with Vanguard and Nigeria (nearly 1000 miles from Cape town) to drop off a container for the Royal Family containing the programme for the visit. The Aircraft failed to make contact and it is unlikely that it came with in 20 miles of the ships.

I do not have a picture of the plane but this is a link to see one                                                              The Short Sunderland Flying Boat (airvectors.net)

The Royal Family visit the engine room.

The second of the commemorative stamps is the 2d with the King and Queen. This stamp was produced from 2 cylinders 6912 and 39. Today I will show the 6912 cylinder which is listed first in catalogues so assume it was first issued?
To tell them apart there are variances which are only connected to a specific cylinder.
The stamps are in sheets of 120 stamps -20 rows by 6 stamps. You will see they are all overprinted SWA as this is version I have for this cylinder

This is a normal pair for comparison but if if you look closely there are spots and marks.

V1 a "V" mark between Queen and King stamp is row 5 stamp 1

The same stamp but the ink on the stamp at lot paler

V2 rectangle mark at left side of the scroll  row 7 stamp 3

V3 "bird" on top of the 2d and curved lines row 10 stamp 6. You can see the scratch starts at the bottom of the stamp though the "U" of South and travels into the stamp below .

V4 white hyphen between A and F of Africa row 11 stamp 6
