75th Anniversary of Royal Family Visit to South Africa Day 97

 Day 97: 7th May 1947

Captain's Diary

The Squadron passes 5 miles off Las Palmas at 0700.

At 0930 the Squadron stopped. An attempt was made to hoist out the Barge but the movement on the ship was too great. However the Queen & Princesses left the ship in the first motor cutter at 1030 and visited HMS Triumph (the King was indisposed with a chill).

It was intended that they would go to HMS Raider after visiting Triumph however it was so difficult boarding and leaving Triumph it was abandoned. They instead went round the ship and they returned to Vanguard at 11.45 and the Squadron carried on at 1220.

HMS Vanguard what happens next Part 2

1953 a year after Princess Elizabeth became Queen there was a Coronation Review of the Fleet. HMS Vanguard is shown on the front cover of the programme.

Sorry it is hard to see but this is the layout of the ships at the review.

Zoomed in to show position of HMS Vanguard
